Gaderská dolina is one of the most visited and most beautiful valleys in Slovakia. It stretches across the western part of the Veľká Fatra and offers a rare combination of a leisurely walk along a paved road in the shade of rock massifs and a climb up steep high-mountain ridge trails.
What not to miss in the valley: The greatest attractions
- Blatnica Castle Ruins: The 13th-century Gothic castle stands on a limestone crag directly above the mouth of the valley. The climb to it takes about 30 minutes from the parking lot along the yellow trail and offers views of the Turiec Basin.
- Čertova brána (Devil's Gate): A majestic rock gorge at the end of the main asphalt route. Here the high limestone walls narrow to just a few metres apart – this is exactly where scenes from the legendary first film about Jánošík from 1921 were shot.
- Dedošová Valley and the crystal-clear Gaderský Stream: A crystal-clear stream flows through the entire valley, lined with richly forested slopes, karst formations, and cave openings.

Tips for hiking in the surroundings
- An easy walk (suitable for families and strollers): From the parking lot in Blatnica to Čertova brána and back. The route measures approximately 16 km there and back, follows an asphalt surface along the water, and even smaller children or cyclists can manage it.
A short video clip of the ride through Čertova brána - Ascent to Tlstá (1,373 m above sea level): A moderately demanding hike with blue markings through limestone cliffs and around the Mažarná cave. The summit offers a panoramic view of the entire Turiec region.
- Tlstá – Ostrá Loop: A classic Greater Fatra loop (approx. 5 to 6 hours). From Tlstá you continue to the rocky peak Ostrá (1,247 m above sea level), where you will find a rock window and exposed sections secured with chains. The descent leads back to the valley via Konský dol or Juriašova dolina.
💡 Practical tips for the end: Movement is allowed only on marked trails and camping outside designated areas is prohibited. Refreshments are available at the mouth of the valley (a mountain hut and snack bars by the parking lot). In the village of Blatnica at the beginning of the valley there is an e-bike rental and a paid parking lot for cars. In the summer months, a bike bus runs from Žilina - you can have your bike loaded and be taken to Turčianske Teplice, or even by train directly from Žilina.
