Imagine a place where time seems to have stood still and where traditions have literally seeped into the walls of houses. Čičmany, hidden in the beautiful embrace of the Strážovské vrchy mountains, are the pride of Slovakia and the very first folk architecture reserve in the world.
Painted wooden houses you won't find anywhere else: What made Čičmany famous worldwide are the dark wooden log houses decorated with white geometric ornaments.
Čičmany are not just an open-air museum. The surrounding nature of the Strážovské vrchy invites hiking – the most popular is the ascent to the highest peak of the mountain range, Strážov, which offers beautiful panoramic views. In winter, sports enthusiasts will also enjoy themselves thanks to the Čičmany Ski Resort (Javorinka), which lies directly above the village.
Access and transport
1. Travel by car
Traveling by car is the most comfortable, as the village is located a bit off the main routes.
- Direction from Žilina (approx. 40 min): Head towards Rajec and Rajecké Teplice (road no. 64). After the village of Fačkov, turn right onto road no. 518, which will take you directly to Čičmany.
- From the direction of Prievidza / Nitra (approx. 35 min): You will head towards Kľačno (road no. 64). At the Fačkov saddle (the well-known ski resort Fačkovské sedlo) you turn left towards Čičmany.
- From Trenčín / Ilava (approx. 45 min): Exit the D1 highway in Ilava and continue towards Valaská Belú. It is a winding but scenic road through the mountains.
- Parking: There is a paid parking lot in the village (right at the entrance to the monument reserve), which is within walking distance of the painted wooden houses.
2. Public Transport (Bus)
Čičmany does not have a direct train connection, so you are dependent on bus transport.
- From Žilina: Direct bus connections depart from the bus station in Žilina. The journey takes approximately 50 to 70 minutes.
- From Rajec: Rajec is an important transfer hub. If you arrive in Rajec by train (the so-called "Rajecká Anča" from Žilina), you can transfer at the bus station in Rajec to a bus directly to Čičmany.
- From Prievidza: There are also connections from Prievidza, but they are less frequent. Usually, a transfer in the village of Kľačno is necessary.
3. Cycling and Hiking
- By bike: The area is popular among cyclists. Access is possible from the Rajecká kotlina basin or from the surroundings towards Ilava. However, be prepared for significant elevation changes.
- On foot: Čičmany is a crossroads of hiking trails. The most significant is the red trail (SNP Heroes' Trail), which passes directly through the village and connects it, for example, with Fačkovské sedlo (below the Kľak peak) or with Strážov.
Tip for visitors: If you are traveling on the weekend, we recommend checking the bus connections in advance, as their frequency is lower on weekends than on working days.
